April 7 meeting recap

Our meeting was great! we missed many of you but hope your Easter weekend was wonderful!

Tirsa's Presidents message came from this article (3 pages) about a book called Bare Branches. It talks about the statistical gender differences in greater Asia and national security implications. The numbers were eye-opening! Ultimately the question Tirsa posed with this article was this: what does this have to do with mothers? She suggested when women's roles are devalued the sense of freedom drastically changes. We don't have to just understand our value as mothers but society at large must understand the value of motherhood as well.

As part of our current events discussion Emily mentioned an article she read in the Wall Street Journal about United States Educational System being a national threat. Natalie mentioned the documentary (on netflix) called "Waiting for Superman". While we discussed education in our country Tirsa posed this question: How can we improve the educational system we have?
The ideas were:
~less time at school. Number of hours spent sitting around, waiting for the next thing to happen are wasteful.
~Vouchers. Encourage free market economic principles to take place in schools. Competition is not a bad thing.
~Teachers pay and  to one degree or another, performance based pay
~more incentives for teachers
~ easier firing of poor teachers
~more Mentoring

Then we discussed principle two in  5000 year leap. Jill posed this question: How virtuous of a people (population) are we really?
Emily contended we are more virtuous than we give ourselves credit for however we are apathetic
Tirsa suggested good people don't know how to live truly good lives because they don't have good principles to live by.
Natalie said she thought the media tends to bring out the bad in all of us because it promotes nothing good. And because of this people are not living virtuous lives, parents are not disciplining their children and children are growing up without accountability.

This line of discussion brought Tirsa to ask this question:
why do you think it is fair to impose your beliefs/morals on someone else through law?
These were our off-the-cuff answers:
-for betterment of society.

-principles generally agreed upon that improve society... these should be protected and left as a foundation of society.
-protect basics
why is it ok for governments to impose criminals or illness on others and not good principles??
-i have the right to vote on my beliefs. that is imiposing our beliefs.

What do you think??

We ended with this quote from Founding Father Samuel Adams:
"But neither the wisest constitution nor the wisest las will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt. He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of his country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man" (p. 59; 5000 Year Leap).

For May's meeting read through Principle 16. Come and join in the discussion! We need many opinions and voices.

Review: March 10 meeting; new reading assignment

We had our March meeting on Saturday, march 10 and it was great!
In the presidents message Tirsa discussed how mothers impact the 3 main threats to national security: Cartels
Terrorism
Natural Disasters

It sounds somewhat dramatic however mothers are essential to everything:
economy
social welfare
emotional health

Think of how these three essentials impact the potential for decline of the 3 main security threats!  granted, mothers cannot influence the occurrence of natural disasters however we can impact how society handles them.

Society at large doesn’t realize the essential nature of mothers (and fathers) to welfare of nations.
2/3 children born women under 30 in united states.  More than 1/2 born out of wedlock.
With statistics like these the family is not falling apart...it is apart. how many families actually exist?

Mothers For Freedom supports the family as a fundamental unit of society. To further the understanding of those around us we need to learn to speak in terms government and government officials understand: national security, economics, social economics, guns.

Then we moved on to discuss what we have been reading in the news. Two stories dominated the conversation
Obama's contraception law and the Catholic Church
Utah law about sex education

We discussed the role of government in our personal lives, use of welfare, growing collectivism and redistribution of wealth through the lens of what we learned in part one of 5000 Year Leap. It was a stimulating, engaging conversation. Exactly what we want out of book discussions.

As a group we decided to read Principles 1 through 10 for our April meeting.

So here are the questions we will see if we can work through in april (the page numbers of the answers/explanations in the book are in parentheses):

Principle One
*the characteristics and examples of natural law.(39-40)
Principle Two
*why did the founders believed that we must be a virtuous people. (54-57)
Principle Three
*Discuss the “natural aristocracy “ and what Jefferson thought would be the greatest threat to our new government. (60-62)
and the Founders“Perspective” on politics (62-64)
Principle Four
*Discuss in depth, DeTocqueville’s view of the role of religion in American life. (79-84)
Principle Five
*Were the Founding Fathers Deists? Discuss Washington and Madison’s thoughts on the hand of God’s influence. (99-100)
Principle Six
*What are the three ways that all men are created equal? (103-104) and what it means to have equal rights. (105)
Principle Seven
*Discuss how protecting equal rights for all would help the entire nation to prosper. What were the key words in the American work ethic?     Are those words still used today? (117-118)
Principle Eight
*Talk about the three great natural rights. (127)
Principle Nine
*Talk about unalienable rights and unalienable duties in both the public and private area. (133-135)
Principle Ten
*Why was Algernon Sidney beheaded? (141-142). How can we apply this to now

I know i know, this list is loooong. In all reality we won't get through it all in our discussion but i will reteriate it helps me tremendously to have something to read for in a book like this. So keep these things in mind, email me your questions and enjoy the ride.

Reading Assignment for March meeting

For our march meeting on the second saturday we will be reading 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen.

We will focus our discussion on Part one of the book.
As you read consider these questions:

  • Discuss the 11 characteristics of Rulers Law. Is Washington D.C. starting to resemble characteristic #9? (11-12)
Discuss the 9 characteristics of People’s Law. Are we still paying attention to the 5th characteristic? (12-14)

  • Discuss why the Articles of Confederation were unsuccessful, and the weakness that was exposed during the battle of Valley Forge. (19-21)
  • Discuss Jefferson’s and Washington’s concerns about the extremes in the party system, and notice the difficulty –from the beginning- to keep the government in the balanced center on the political spectrum. (27-29)

  • Discuss the fear that the Founders had of our possible drift toward collectivism. Have we been listening to their warnings? (29-30)
  • Why was there a need for an educated public? What did Jefferson say about this issue? (30-31)
  • Discuss the Founder’s basic beliefs, their varied backgrounds and the people that inspired them. (31-32)

Please consider these points as you read and we will discuss what we can in the time frame we have. I am sure we won't get to everything so i would encourage you to write down your thoughts. For me writing what i think helps solidify my opinions, clarify my questions and motivates me to learn more.

Happy Reading!!

First Ever Salt Lake City Chapter Meeting

Mothers For Freedom SL had their first meeting ever. It was informative and exciting. Tirsa invited Patricia Robinson to help us understand more about Utah's caucus system. Most of us had never participated in Utah's voting and caucus system and needed a basic overview. We had only a few minutes to discuss the Declaration of Independence. It was enjoyable and exciting to discuss these types of topics with like-minded women. We hope to see more of you in the future.

Here are some helpful websites Ms. Robinson told us about:
vote utah.gov
votesmart.org
Find your precinct

Caucus Information
Republicans meeting: March 15
Democrats meeting: March 13
If you are hesitant to claim a party affiliation or have disdain for the party system consider this: our country has always had a two party system; sort of a check and balance on the public. By getting involved you can help change a party for the better.

Don't have a party? Not sure what one you like? Click below do to your research:
Republician Party Platform
Democratic Party Platform

Please remember becoming a member of Mothers for Freedom doesn't cost anything but time and not that much either. We meet the second saturday monthly at 10:00 am.

We are trying to decide what book to read next month. Feel free to leave a comment with your vote or email Tirsa.
